The Human Connection (Rant)

Posted on: May 18, 2008

Call it what you may – romantic love, friendship, filial love, mentor disciple relationship, parenthood, at the core it is something that caters to a very essential human need, a need for human recipocation, a need to be respected, to be cared for, to be heard, to be understood – the human connection.

Isnt the mentor just as enriched by the disciple’s reverence as the disciple is? For all our possessions, our strappings, titles, positions, there is a vurnerable part which must reach out. What would it be like, if we were alone on this Earth, without the possibility of a human voice ever soothing our ears (and only the sounds of the wind whistling by, birds crying, waves crashing against the rocks), without the moments of magical intimacy when the seperatedness of being somehow merges into oneness (isnt holding hands a profound expression of togetherness), without the inexpicible mirth of sharing common memories, without eyes which express warmth and concern when we are in anguish, or sparkle in welcome at our arrival.

we would just be empty shells stumbling about, and degenerate soon into animals. The burden of existence would surely prove to be too much for our sole soul. even our happiness would be a weight if we could not share it, what to speak of pain. We would be prisoners in our mind even for the entire Earth at our disposal. Soon our Self itself would fade away, for isnt the seat of our sense of self the invisible lines which connect us with other humans, rather than our own being?

Even the truest sex is a means of expression of this closeness, this togatherness, rather than its final end. It may be nature’s end, but it is not the human end.

They say humans are islands & perhaps that is true. But it is possibility of building bridges to other islands that makes life worthwhile. And such bridges are built. Built during moments of vurnerability, when layers of defenses fall away, exposing our naked being, our soul.

even the tyrants, the knaves, the tycoons, the war mongers, who would seem to view humans as instruments to ends, what would all thier riches and power amount to in a world devoid of humans. do they also not somewhere need to be loved, to be viewed with tenderness in the eyes, to be listened to, to cherish cameradierie?

i dont know what a soul is, but there is something which may be called “a meeting of souls”, when a connection if formed much beyond the level of appearences, deep inside our being. Merely a secretion of chemicals in our brain maybe, but it is part of our essential humanity.
